Materia pre workout review

Materia is PR Breaker’s newest offering to the pre workout market, being sold in 20 serving containers with a serving scoop of 22.5g.

Materia’s claimed to promote:

  • Pump
  • Focus
  • Strength
  • Endurance
  • Reduced Fatigue

It comes in Cotton Candy flavor – sounds tasty, but can it’s ingredients back up the claims? Read on to find out.

About The Company

PR Breaker was founded by a man called Derek Charlebois. There’s a nice back story of how he found the urge to create a supplements company – but in all honesty, we only care about results here at SupplementTester.

For this reason we’ll quickly move on to Materia pre workout’s ingredient list.

The Ingredients and How They Work

Materia has a good number of ingredients, and it’s great that none of them are hidden in any proprietary blends. Not only that, Citrulline Malate’s been dosed optimally which is great to see (many companies often underdose this ingredient).

It looks like a good product, so we’re excited to take a closer look. See for yourself:

Citrulline Malate

Citrulline Malate is one of our favorite pre workout ingredients. It’s able to increase your nitric oxide levels, which directly enhances blood flow and your muscle pumps while you lift weights.

PR Breaker has done well to dose this optimally at 8,000mg – so you’ll be sure to experience better muscle pumps in the gym. One benefit ticked off the claims, so hopefully PR Breaker can continue in this manner.

Creatine Monohydrate

Good work by PR Breaker again here. A 5g dosage of Creatine Monohydrate means you won’t have to take it separately, as you can get your daily dosage in Materia Pre Workout.

It’s shown to increase your strength and endurance, which is why it’s also one of our favorite pre workout ingredients. No problems here.

Beta-Alanine

This is the first slip-up by PR Breaker. Beta-Alanine can cause a distracting side effect called paresthesia – which is a tingling on the skin of your face, chest, fingertips and toes.

We gave Beta-Alanine a chance before, as it’s shown to increase muscular endurance. However, we really didn’t enjoy the feeling of paresthesia.

L-Tyrosine

L-Tyrosine’s shown to improve your focus, but doesn’t offer any other benefits. As Caffeine offers this benefit, there’s no need for L-Tyrosine to be in here too.

We believe that this ingredient is more suited to a Nootropic than a pre-workout.

Choline

This is the worst ingredient inside any product – it’s not shown to offer any benefits, but makes your breath smell fishy (which isn’t a good side effect).

Caffeine

Caffeine is a key ingredient in both fat burners and pre workouts when dosed correctly. Why?

Answer: Because it can improve your strength, endurance and focus – which are benefits perfectly suited to these products. But one thing you need to look out for is the dosage (all stimulants can cause side effects when dosed too highly).

For example, if you consume too much coffee in a short period of time, you’ll begin to feel jittery and then eventually suffer from an energy crash – leaving you feeling exhausted and ready for bed. Well, this is something you really want to avoid when taking pre workout supplements.

Unfortunately, Materia contains a big 300mg per serving (which can cause side effects). We recommend staying under 300mg of Caffeine per serving, unless you’re very tolerant to it and can handle 6 or more coffees per day.

Huperzine A

Huperzine A is believed to improve your cognition, but has been reported to cause numerous side effects. There are other ingredients that can offer this same benefit without causing side effects, so there’s no reason to risk side effects here.

Side Effects

PR Breaker have included some great ingredients in Materia, but they’ve also included 3 ingredients that can cause side effects.

We always recommend that you choose products that are free from side effects (why would you pay to experience unwanted negative effects?)

Anyway, here’s what you could suffer from by taking Materia:

  • Paresthesia (tingling on the skin of your face, chest, hands, fingertips and toes)
  • Fishy breath
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Cramping

Review Conclusion

PR Breaker have added some key pre workout nutrients in optimal dosages. This is frustrating, as other companies often don’t do this, and Materia would have been one of the best pre workouts we’ve seen if they carried on in this manner.

However, underneath the effective ingredients, PR Breaker added in some ineffective ingredients that can cause numerous side effects (as you can see above).

As a result, we can’t recommend this pre workout, as we don’t believe it can compete with the best on the market.
